Neighborhood plans for the mural

The mural was first painted in 1972 and has not had the benefit of mural maintenance since its creation. Over the years patches of the exterior wall surface have fallen exposing the brick facade to water and inclement weather resulting in the loosening of more of the wall surface and mural image.

The wall is in dire need of resurfacing to provide a stable surface for the painting of the mural.

West 45th Street and West 46th Street Block Associations and Hells Kitchen Neighborhood Association have joined together to work with artist Denise Penizzotto to organize, raise funds and repaint the mural. We have our sights set on a 2020 resurfacing to then be followed by the mural painting.

What We've Achieved

We’ve experienced a few delays but have maintained a steady presence and dedicated commitment to saving this mural.

Thanks to the generosity of Mark Golden and Golden paints we have secured the paint needed for the re-creation restoration. Goldens have mixed the paints to match the exact colors Artist Belkin used in 1972.

We have raised approximately 50% of the funds needed. We have a big expense coming up for the scaffold to cover the 60’ x 65’ wall. For details see our non-profit charitable donation link : https://charity.gofundme.com/mathewspalmerplayground

We have tremendous community support with plans to include the community in the painting efforts much like Belkin did in 1972.
